The Gothic in Popular Music

Bosco Tent, Brighton

Wed 29th  May 7pm-9pm £12/10

An exploration of this much-misunderstood genre with illuminating talks, panel discussions, reminiscences and music from past to present. With Jon Klein (Specimen/Siouxsie and the Banshees) journalist Simon Price (Spellbound), Jonny Slut (Specimen), Hugh Jones (Batcave), Rose McDowall (Strawberry Switchblade/ Current93) and Ian Trice.

Side One 7-7.50pm Talk: The Gothic In Popular Music From a life spent in the shadows of this inspiring and rich aesthetic, Ian Trice presents the story of the Gothic in popular music as part of a wider narrative: two thousand years of cultural fears (but mainly the glory years of 1980-84). He joins the musical dots that link country ballads, 60s splatter platters and chanson crooners with black metal, dubstep and modern electronic music, pausing along the way to celebrate Goth in all its spikily sepulchral seductiveness.

Side Two 8-9pm The Gothic In Popular Music Panel Discussion Join an all-star panel for an in-depth discussion on the rise and influence of Goth music and fashion. Expect fond reminiscences of the early days of the 80s Goth scene and its seminal club, the Batcave. Chaired by journalist and author Simon Price.

Hugh Jones is one of the founders of the original Batcave and has worked with a range of bands including Soft Cell, The Associates and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Rose McDowall is best remembered as half of the duo Strawberry Switchblade. She has also been guest vocalist for the likes of Coil and Current 93.

Simon Price is a British music journalist and author. He is also founder and DJ at Brighton’s popular Alternative 80s club night Spellbound.

Jon Klein was co-founder of the London club The Batcave, the epicenter of the UK goth scene in the early 1980s. He played guitar with Specimen and Siouxsie and the Banshees and has recorded and performed with a wide array of other artists from Thomas Dolby to Sinead O Connor.

Jonny Slut was keyboard player of the highly influential Specimen and one of the Goth pin-ups of the 1980s. He has worked with the KLF and Adamski, and was the lead singer of Atomizer.
